Blog 1253: Sunburn
Swimmers,
Whilst its great to be outside enjoying the nice weather, topping up on
your levels of Vitamin D and getting lots of fresh air, it is noticeable that
many of you (mostly the girls) are getting sunburn which has a big impact on
your ability to train and compete.
There are many articles out there showing that sunburn, as well as
causing long term skin damage, makes your body work harder than necessary and
creates unpleasant side effects. It’s important to remember that even if you already have a tan, you’re
exposing your body to UV rays, which is what actually causes damage and
decreased sports performance - in excessive amounts.
On top of usual recovery functions, a sun burnt body has an extra work
load:
- Pain and discomfort can make simple operations such as getting dressed and stretching a little tricky.
- Fluid loss is triggered by heat, so sunburns can contribute to dehydration.
- Risk of infection comes with a sunburn that is blistering and peeling.
- New skin needs to be generated if you’ve got the type of burn that peels.
- Poor blood circulation can result as vessels are constricted and blood is rushing to the affected area.
- You’re tired because of all the extra work your body is doing.
At this crucial point in the season you need to be sensible in the sun
by covering up, wearing sunscreen, wearing a hat and staying in the shade at the
hottest times of day.

Blog 1245: England Youth Games
A number of Long Eaton swimmers competed in the England Youth Games at the Olympic Park, including Gregory Cox, who won a Bronze medal in the pool, and Rob Abraham who competed in the shot 5th and Discus 6th. Sam Parker has been in France for 2 weeks competing in Triathalons and has qualified for the French Nationals. Well done to all Long Eaton swimmers who competed at these or other events.

Blog 1240: Diddy league Weekend!
Well done to all of the swimmers who competed in the Diddy League Competition at the weekend. Both rounds were incredibly tough draws. The 'A' team put in a briliant performance to win their gala at bramote, winning 23 out of the 47 races and 10 of the 14 relays. The 'B' Team arguably had the harder of the two draws, facing very strong Mansfield, Derby, and Etwall teams! However, the times and performances show progression, which is what we are aiming to achieve. Remember, you have no control of how other swimmers perform, all you can do is swim to the best of your ability! Over the weekend there was 11 disqualifications across both teams, and alot of this was down to inexperience. For a number of swimmers this was their first gala, and these figures will decrease over time. We still have a long way to go yet to get things right, and your skills need to be worked on to the best of your ability whenever you are in the water. The diddy league competition is much stronger and competitive than last year, so be prepared to fight for every point in the race! Keep working hard and success will come!
See you all saturday

Blog 1230: Youth and Seniors Midland review
This weekend saw Youth and Senior swimmers compete at the Regional Championships, these are the 3rd tier of swimming behind international and National and so there was a very high level of competition including Olympic Qualifiers and hopefuls. Long Eaton's improvement can be shown in comparison with last years Championship.
Qualifiers who entered 2011, 2; 2012, 6. Callum Henley, Hannah Cox, Kate Williamson, Ryan Cendrowski, Jo Parker and Chloe Scattergood
Finalists 2011 1; 2012, 4. Chloe Scattergood, Jo Parker, Kate Williamson, Hannah Cox
Medals 2011 0; 2012, 1 Silver, Hannah Cox
The Silver medal was won by Hannah Cox in the 50 Breaststroke and she was only a finger tip away from a Gold. We also entered relays teams, showing great strength in depth as our DX swimmers swim for DX at this meet, with Hannah Jones, Mischa Menzies, Kevin Wallbank, Danny Anderson, Jessica Cross and Tyler-Ann Black, all reaching individual finals and winning medals.
This continued improvement and success needs to be built on, so next year we need to aim for more Qualifiers and more Finalists and medals. It was nice to see Chloe Tipping turn up to support her team- mates and friends, and get a taste of what she hopes to qualify for next year. I would encourage this in more of you, as, remember, we are a team and even by being poolside at a meet of this quality you will learn a lot from it that will help you develop.
