Blog 1882: Message for all at Matlock March 1st & 2nd

We have been asked to remind swimmers competing at the County events at Matlock on Saturday and Sunday of the following:

Please remember to pack indoor shoes to wear on poolside. This prevents slipping, protects the feet and helps preserve the cleanliness of the venue. Poolside shoes must be worn when moving between the changing rooms and the sports hall! During the Relay gala at QLC swimmers will not be permitted off the poolside and into the marshalling area without footwear. The definition of indoor/poolside footwear is that which is not ever worn outside!

Although poolside space at Matlock is limited, swimmers should take a towel with them to dry off before returning to the sports hall. The sports hall is NOT a changing room, it is a space to relax and refuel in.

Unfortunately it has become necessary to ban ball games in the sports hall so do not take a ball -
rollers and skipping ropes are fine.

Finally the sports hall was left in an unsatisfactory state last Sunday evening, with swimmers leaving a lot of rubbish on the floor. This is not acceptable. Please use the bins provided in the hall.

Blog 1881: Counties

Great job by those Long Eaton swimmers who swam this weekend at counties. Lots of PB's regional times and bling. Considering we are lower on entries than last year and many arent doing a full programme, we still lie 3rd in the medal table only 4 golds down on this time last year but with a higher overall medal tally.

Thanks to all who voluntered to help either the team or event run smooth.

A quote from a fellow coach. "your swimmers look like the most professional team here". Coming from a coach of another Derbyshire club that means alot.

Blog 1880: Camp Report Part 4

After the wind and the rain the sun came back and the pool started to warm up. The last 2 days of training were some of the best I have seen from any Long Eaton swimmer. We held a gala on the last day using the race objective sheets the swimmers had filled in this worked really well and will be brought into the club from J3 swimmers up. on the last night everyone presented their birthday speeches which were really good and we settled in for a few games of pool and to watch the "professional" show. Another successful camp was had by all with a safe flight and journey home. Details of next years will be released next week.

Blog 1879: Camp Report Part 3

Rain and Wind hit the island for the next 2 days. Whilst the rain was in heavy showers the wind was fairly constant all this reduced the water temperature in the pool considerably. It was pleasing that the vast majority of the swimmers managed to battle through the tough conditions with a couple even reducing the turn around times to get the whole set in.
This picture was morning training in the wind and rain - Dont forget to feel for the coach standing in the wind and rain for the whole session.

Blog 1878: Camp Report Part 2

Training began with the 60 x 100 challenge. Everyone beat last years totals with Adam, Ryan, Eden and Sam (in fins) completing all 60. With all swimmers completing over 10K in the first day along with a gym session, a much needed full stretch was taken. This pattern continued the following day along with 1k walks to and from the pool and gym as we were in the Oasis resort. On the Saturday we trained in the AM and moved to the Papagayo resort. With the afternoon off the swimmers started filling in and handing in their "camp work". Later that evening we went for a game of 10 pin bowling.

Blog 1877: Camp Report Part 1

As you may know we didnt have Wifi on camp so unfortunatley I couldnt report dailt on what was an amazing experience for those swimmers involved.

We set off to Birmingham airport on Wednesday 12th at 5:45 making it to check in, in plenty of time in our Orange hoodies and tour shirts all with Fueteraventura spelt wrong on them (a printer error not mine)  but still proud to be in club colours. The flight over was uneventful with only a few bumps and a smooth landing. On the bus journey I gave the swimmers their tasks for the week. The camp is not just about training but education and development as well. The swimmers had to write a race script from when they got up to the end of the race, fill in a goal setting sheet, a race objectives sheet and each swimmer had to do a birthday speach for another infront of everyone drawn at random. Along with 2 pool and either a mobility and visulization session or gym session everyday this was a busy camp.

Blog 1870: Leicester League

The swimmers had a return visit to Braunstone on Saturday 8th February to take part in the second round of the Leicester League. Once again they found themselves up against strong opponents and with Leicester Penguins A team winning 31 of the 51 events, it was hardly surprising that we had no winners on the night.

However, this was in fact a very satisfying gala for our swimmers and both Kaye and I were really impressed with the attitude and determination shown in all age groups. They rose to the challenge of racing against fast swimmers, and this is illustrated by the fact that a majority of them swam close to their pb times, and several smashed their pb’s by a significant margin.

The preparation of the team on poolside during the warm up and the spirit shown throughout the gala were key factors in demonstrating to other teams that we meant business. Nothing illustrated this more than Daniel Foss swimming last leg in the medley relay. Taking over in last place a long way behind the other teams he could have taken it on himself to go easy on his leg as it appeared to be a lost cause. Daniel however had other ideas, hunting down the swimmer in front and passing him half way down the second length, thus gaining an extra point for his team. This positive approach was also evident in numerous other races as swimmers finished strongly in an attempt to gain points for the team.

As I walked around the pool at the end I passed one of the judges. As I shook his hand and thanked him his reply was “your swimmers swam very well, you should be proud of them”. And we were!

Thanks to all the helpers, and officials who helped out at the gala. Thanks also to all the parents for the vocal support and for all your positive comments. The swimmers deserve the praise.

Gala Result:

Leicester Penguins A: 269  Leicester Sharks: 215  Market Harborough 166  Leicester Penguins B: 158  Long Eaton 129   Loughborough A: 127
