Blog 2657: Matlock Review

Early season racing is all about setting up for the season ahead. After a break and just getting back into training we, as coaches do not expect PB's at this time of year, thats why there was no PB train/count or tweets from Saturday. You may of noticed that neither myself or Alex had our stop watches on us, nor did we look at the score board all that often (habits are hard to break and we did occasionally check, instantly berating ourselves for doing so) but instead we focused on the process of racing and the development of race skills and race tactics, along with the professional attitude of the swimmers making sure they did the right things between races and were prepared and focused on every race. We handed out process sheets at the start of the day and asked the swimmers to fill in areas of races that they wanted to work on or that myself and Alex had discussed with them and regardless of the time if they worked on those skills they had a great race. They handed them into us before each race and we scored them on the processes during the race and fed that back to them afterwards. What this did was educate the swimmers on how to race and what they need to focus on and I have to say I was impressed by the vast majority in their efforts (some youth boys seemed to focus on other areas towards the end of the day, as boys do!). It looked from ground level like our skills were on top form throughout the day and even when swimmers were tired they were trying to maintain their skill level and processes. Both sessions finished with a Skins event and Long Eaton through Sam Pearson and Helen Gorman were second on the touch in both. Sam Pearson won top boy. A tremendous day of high quality racing from all Long Eaton swimmers and big thanks to all the volunteers from Team Manager Debbie to all the Officials who helped make this day as successful as it was.

The warm up for this weekends gala at Matlock is:
8.00am for 9.00am start
13.00 for 14.00 start. Please check as this time may change

As poolside space is limited, it may be an idea for you to take your drawstring bag, or a smaller bag with your hat goggles and towel etc.

There are lockers available or you may leave your larger items in the sports hall. Before entering the hall from the pool/changing rooms you must make sure you are dry and wearing footwear.
NO mobile phones, or devices with cameras are allowed on poolside.

Of the fee standing orders received so far this month, ONE THIRD ARE WRONG.

Please can you all ensure you alter your payment to the correct amount before next month and arrange to pay the shortfall for this month, either by cheque to the club post box at West Park or by direct payment to the same account details as your standing order. If you do make a direct payment can you please email me to let me know.

For those of you who have paid twice, thank you very much. If these are not donations, please contact me to arrange a refund!!

If you wish to pay this amount as a lump sum, please be aware that it falls due IN FULL on 1st January 2016.

Blog 2641: Winter is coming (and Game of Thrones is back soon :) )

Those of you into GoT will understand the joke. In all seriousness winter is coming, I know we haven't yet again had a summer but its time to prepare for winter. Up your Vit C, D, B12 complex and Omega 3 intake and make sure you are getting all the right nutriants naturally before supplementing. We would also recommend that all “at risk groups” specified by the NHS get the flu vaccine, we would also recommend other athletes to consider this. Most places will only make the vaccine available to over 16 year olds unless you are within the at risk groups.
At risk groups:
  • People aged 65 years and over
All patients adged 6 months or over who meet the following conditions:
  • Chest problems, including certain asthmatics on steroid inhalers or tablets and those with chronic bronchitis or emphysema
  • Chronic heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Chronic Liver Disease
  • Chronic Neurological Disease
  • Patients who are immunosuppressed - have no spleen or whose spleen does not work
  • Pregnant women
  • Those in contact with people who may be at risk of developing serious complications from flu (any of those listed above)
There will be a number of places which offer the flu vaccine, and at risk groups will be able to get it from their gp in your area but a quick google for those who are not in that group gave us these results.

Blog 2640: Parents being paid?

Swim parents, have you ever thought about earning money whilst you are sat watching your child swim? Well you can. Become a lifeguard and the club will pay you to watch your child's session at Tent College. If you are interested please contact Angela Hidle.
